Ngày 19.12.2013 hải quan/quan thuế phi trường Frankfurt, CHLB Đức, đã chặn bắt đại sứ Việt Nam tại Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, Nguyễn Thế Cường, vì tình nghi ông ta mang 20.000 € tiền mặt mà không khai báo.

Cảnh sát đưa ông Cường về đồn, tra hỏi và cáo buộc ông tội „rửa tiền“. Đại sứ Việt Nam biện minh số tiền này là tiền ông mang về nước giúp nạn nhân bão lụt.
Vụ xì căng đan của ông Cường đang có đà dẫn đến một xì căng đan chính trị.

Tổng lãnh sự Việt Nam tại Frankfurt lập tức khiếu nại nhà nước Đức và than phiền hải quan Đức đã vi phạm trầm trọng hiệp ước ký tại Wien/Vienna bảo đảm tính miễn nhiễm dành cho quan chức ngoại giao.

Cảnh sát thả ông đại sứ Việt Nam sau khi ông đóng tiền phạt thế chân 3500,00 €.
